why does a potato chip go floppy in salty water

The salty water is more concentrated than the potato cells, so water leaves the cells by osmosis. The cells lose pressure and the chip goes limp.

For the examName the partially permeable membrane and say which way the water moves. That's both marks.

Why it's different

Most study tools just repeat your notes back to you. Gist does two things they don't.

It learns how you learn.

It notices which explanations click for you: tables or stories, quick or step by step. The more you use it, the sharper it gets, and you can see and edit what it has learned.

formatcomparisons and tables
depthstep by step
pacesteady

It catches what's confusing you, and fixes it the same way every time.

When you keep mixing two things up, Gist builds a reference that worked and brings it back whenever the confusion does.

"You've asked about osmosis and diffusion three times. Let me make a reference we can come back to."

How it works

Four steps. Then it gets out of your way.

Class notes, lecture slides, PDFs or your whole syllabus, organised by subject.

Ask anything

In plain English. Answers come from your material, with the page they came from.

The science

Not vibes. Learning science.

Gist is built on things learning scientists have known for decades. Tell it what you're studying and it picks the right approach, then tunes it as it learns you.

Big picture first

Start with the overview, then add detail.

Guided questions

Sometimes a question gets you there faster than an answer.

Spaced repetition

Weak topics come back at the right intervals.

Retrieval practice

Testing yourself beats re-reading every time.

Just above your level

Explanations pitched one step beyond where you are.

Privacy

Private by default.

What you ask is between you and your tutor.

  • Your notes and questions belong to your account.
  • Nothing about your use is shared with your school or university.
  • Answers show where they came from, so you can always check the source.
FAQ

Questions students ask.

Is this just ChatGPT with a different name?

No. ChatGPT doesn't read your specific notes, doesn't track which explanations work for you, and doesn't notice when you keep getting confused about the same thing. Gist is built around all three.

What can I use it for?

GCSE and A-level subjects, university modules, or anything else you have material for. If you can upload it, it works.

How do I know the answers are right?

Answers come from your uploaded material with citations, so you can always check the source. For things outside your material, it uses its broader knowledge and tells you when it's doing that.

Can I use it without uploading anything?

Yes. There's a no-upload mode for quick tutoring on any topic.

What if it gets my learning style wrong?

Just tell it. The profile updates from your feedback, and you can see and edit it directly.

Will my school or university see what I ask?

No. Your account is yours. Nothing about your use is shared with your school or university.
